It short month, but we've got a lot going on at WSKG!
Suit up with the WSKG Team on February 6th for the WSKG Music Bowl! It's a day-long halftime show that'll have you snapping your fingers and shuffling your feet through the decades. Highlights include The Big Band Years at 11:00am, Magic Moments: Best of the 50s Pop at 1:00pm and Ed Sullivan's Rock and Roll Classics at 3:00pm.
Later that week, WSKG Radio will be pushing the limits with One-Day Wednesday on February 9th: we hope to raise $100,000 in just one day! You are WSKG, and it only takes one contribution to be a part of our big day. Contribute early, and you could win an iPad! Join us for the news and music you value in WSKG Radio programming every day, mixed with the rush of a one-day fundraiser. And be sure to listen at 1:00pm, 7:00pm and 8:00pm for three special hours of The Moth Radio Hour.
These fundraisers support the radio and television programming you enjoy everyday - and also foster upcoming documentaries that celebrate the history and heritage of the community we live in. WSKG excitedly looks forward to the premiere of two new original documentaries, JOHNSON and WATSON, this coming fall. On February 11th, Brian Frey (Television Broadcast Operations Director and writer, producer and director of the documentaries) and Caroline Basso (Director of Development and Marketing) will head to the IBM Bicentennial Committee for a presentation and discussion on the two films.
And what great timing, as an IBM supercomputer makes a special appearance on the popular trivia show Jeopardy! and PBS's NOVA. NOVA: Smartest Machine on Earth airs February 9th at 10:00pm on WSKG TV and investigates the world of artificial intelligence. Known as “Watson,” the IBM supercomputer is so advanced it’s pursuing the first-of-its-kind challenge competing against Jeopardy! champions to prove its uncanny ability to mimic the human thought process.
WSKG is also dedicated to keeping the legacy of George F. Johnson alive. Johnson built one of the largest and most successful organizations in United Sates history, and the Endicott Johnson Shoe Corporation resulted in vibrant, tight -knit "EJ communities" throughout the Southern Tier. The original WSKG film tells the incredible story of Johnson, one of the most successful and progressive industrialists in American history. We'd like you to be a part of preserving the history of Endicott Johnson. Submit your photographs showing the mixing and melding of factory and home to The WSKG Picture Project on Flickr, or contact Tina Reinhard (TReinhard@WSKG.org, (607) 729-0100 x312) to submit hard copies, and we might use your photo in the film!
Also, visit WSKG's new news blog, WSKGNews, for the Picture of the Week selected from photos taken by community members in our coverage area and submitted to The WSKG Picture Project. Compiling information from New York's Southern Tier and Northern Pennsylvania, WSKGNews lets you hear audio a second time around, enjoy stories from Local Journalism Center reporter Emma Jacobs and the Innovation Trail, and follow the area's top stories at a one-stop, reliable source. Plus, you can share your opinions and thoughts on the stories and help us stay as relevant as possible!
February is Black History month, and we'll present a variety of programs. On WSKG TV, see Independent Lens: When I Rise at 10:00pm on February 8th and peruse a variety of programs available through the PBS Video Portal. For Radio, WSKG's Off the Page features author Greg Donaldson, author of Zebratown: The True Story of a Black Ex-con and a White Single Mother in Small-Town America on February 1st at 1pm (rebroadcast at 7pm). On February 8th at 1:00pm, listen for Open Source: The Great Migration that Changed America with Isabel Wilkerson, author of The Warmth of Other Suns. Finally, a new documentary, Back of the Bus: Mass Transit, Race, and Inequality, takes a look at mass transit and the challenges that people of color face with public transportation on February 17th at 1:00pm (rebroadcast at 7:00pm).
WSKG's Education and Outreach team will wrap up two contests this month - apply for the Home Tweet Home Competition by February 11th and the Johnny Only Songwriting Contest by February 25th. Going to miss the deadlines? We've got two more (very different) projects to get involved in! Celebrate the power of creating your own stories and illustrations and craft an original story for the 2011 PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. Or fashion a delicious and nutritious after-school snack. This year's After School Fuel Recipe Contest asks you to submit a recipe chock-full of vitamins and minerals and easy to prepare on the go, perfect for active, healthy WSKG Kids!
