It's 2011!

The Binghamton Philharmonic presents their next concert at Binghamton University's Anderson Center on Sunday, January 23rd at 3:00pm. WSKG Radio will be on-hand and will broadcast the performance on Monday, January 31st at 9:00pm. See and hear violinist James Ehnes featured in Mozart's Violin Concert No. 3 and hear music by Rossini and Brahms.
Health issues take center stage in January's episodes of Community Conversation. On January 11th, we'll discuss obesity (look for related special programming on WSKG TV this month, including coverage of November's Obesity Summit on January 21st at 10:00pm featuring local Working on Wellness (WOW) partner Mary McFadden of the Broome County Health Department). On January 25th, we'll look at what's happened with President Obama's Affordable Care Act and what's to come throughout the year.
Calling all WSKG Kids! The Education and Outreach Department would like you to enter two very fun, very different contests! Home Tweet Home, a partnership between WSKG and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, invites students grades K-12 to work in groups and submit proposals with ideas on creating and/or improving bird habitats in local communities. Selected proposals will receive a $150 stipend to implement their winning project! The Cornell Lab of Ornithology will send all entrants a kit with educational materials needed to carry out the project, including three colorful posters, seeds, data collection sheets and more. Apply by February 11th, and show us how you'd help a bird habitat near you!
We all know birds make great music, but what about you? The Johnny Only Song Writing Contest invites students in grades K-12 to write songs that emphasize the value of exercise and nutrition in their lives. Winning songs will appear on Move It!, WSKG's original children's television show. Submit your own original work by February 25th!
Are you a teacher looking to reinforce those healthy messages in your classroom? Stride with Pride offers an opportunity to use pedometers in the classroom! WSKG's WOW program will help you integrate movement in the classroom and curriculum and encourage exercise as a part of healthy student living. Students wear pedometers during the school day and record their daily steps taken for six weeks. At the end of six weeks, the Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University will collect and evaluate the data. To join us for the interactive teacher training on February 7th, contact Nancy Coddington at NCoddington@WSKG.org or by phone at (607) 729-0100 x342.
On January 6th, WSKG looks forward to hosting the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce Broome Leadership Institute (BLI) for its Media Day Workshop. BLI consists of community leaders from the Greater Binghamton area who learn about numerous facets of community life. The afternoon will conclude with a panel discussion involving representatives from regional media organizations. WSKG is proud to partner with the Greater Binghamton Chamber and other local media outlets on this important leadership initiative!
Here's to starting 2011!
